First Year Players  is the most successful student-run theater organization at the University of Virginia.

FYP remains true to its mission:

  • To create an artistic, supportive atmosphere for students in their first year at UVA, and

  • To provide the UVA community with quality musical theater.

Although the Cast is composed entirely of first-years and first-year transfers, FYP incorporates students of all years and interests: Student technicians, directors, musicians, and administrators work year-round to raise funds, produce shows, and manage the organization.

The many different areas of FYP - Cast, Staff, Tech, and Pit - come together every semester to present a musical that keeps students, faculty, and townspeople alike coming back!

The FYP Cast experience combines an incredible artistic and social opportunity in which first-years and first-year transfer students perform in high quality musicals under the direction of upperclassmen committed to giving first-years the best time of their budding college careers.

Anyone of any year or background can get involved in FYP Tech.

Both upperclassmen and first-years single-handedly construct a set, plot lights, run sound, all in a social, relaxed, and fun environment. Anyone can become a part of  a tech team. Tech teams include lights, sound, carp, costumes, paint, props, and hair and makeup. There are also opportunities to apply for a head or assistant position for each tech team!

Playing in FYP Pit is a great way for students of any year to get involved in FYP. Join with some of the best musicians on Grounds to learn musical scores and be an integral part of every production! If you play an instrument, the pit is a great way to stay in practice with exciting music, as well as an opportunity to meet some of the friendliest, most awesome students at UVA!
