HOO WE ARE
Currently in its fifth decade, First Year Players is the oldest student-run theater organization at the University of Virginia. FYP remains true to our founder Ed Golden's vision with a two-pronged mission: to provide the UVA community with quality musical theater, and to create an artistic, supportive atmosphere for first-year students and new transfers.
FYP puts on two musicals an academic year, ranging from Legally Blonde to Cabaret. Although the cast is entirely composed of first-years and transfer students, FYP incorporates students of all ages and interests! Student technicians, directors, musicians, and administrators work year-round to raise funds, produce the shows, and manage the organization. The three branches of FYP – cast, tech, and pit – come together every semester to form one family in the name of live theatre. Check out the 'Get Involved' tab to see how you can join!
Spring 2021 Show:
Anyone of any year or background can get involved in FYP Tech. Both upperclassmen and first-years work together to construct a set, plot lights, run sound, and so much more! No prior experience is required to join a tech team! Tech teams include lights, sound, carp, costumes, paint, props, and hair/makeup. For more advanced techies, there are also chances to apply for head and assistant positions for each team!
The FYP Cast provides first-years and transfer students an opportunity to perform at the college level outside of the competitive drama department environment! Anyone is invited to audition at the beginning of each semester! Under the direction of upperclassmen, the casties learn to build a musical performance from the group up.
Playing in the FYP Pit is a great way for students of any year to get involved in the organization. Join some of the best musicians on Grounds to work through beautiful scores and play an integral part in every production! The FYPit is a great way to stay in practice with new and exciting music. It also provides the opportunity to meet some of the friendliest and most talented students at UVA!
