Hoo We Are
Currently in its fifth decade, First Year Players is the oldest student-run theater organization at the University of Virginia. FYP remains true to our founder Ed Golden's vision with a two-pronged mission: to provide the UVA community with quality musical theater, and to create an artistic, supportive atmosphere for first-year students and new transfers. FYP puts on two musicals per academic year, ranging from Legally Blonde to Cabaret. Although the cast is entirely composed of first-years and transfer students, FYP incorporates students of all ages and interests! Student technicians, directors, musicians, and administrators work year-round to raise funds, produce the shows, and manage the organization. The three branches of FYP – cast, tech, and pit – come together every semester to form one family in the name of live theater. Check out the Get Involved tab to learn more!
Anyone of any year or background can get involved in FYP Tech. Both upperclassmen and first-years work together to construct a set, plot lights, run sound, and so much more! No prior experience is required to join tech. Tech teams include lights, sound, carpentry, costumes, paint, props, and hair/makeup. For those more experienced with tech, there are also head and assistant positions for each team.
The FYP Cast provides first-years and transfer students an opportunity to perform at the college level outside of the competitive drama department environment. Under the direction of a team of upperclassmen, the cast combines dialogue, music, and choreography to put on a musical performance. Auditions are at the beginning of each semester!
Playing in the FYP Pit is a great way for students of any year to get involved in the organization. Join an integral part of every production by performing the score for the show with other student musicians on Grounds! The "FYPit" is a great way to strengthen musical reading and ensemble skills. It also provides the opportunity to meet some of the friendliest and most talented students at UVA!
